“The Sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.”
― Jacques Cousteau
In the last years, marine environment, especially in the European seas, has suffered a number of accidents due to an incredible increase in marine traffic.
By looking at the annual report of the European Maritime Safety Agency, it is clear that 50.9% of total marine accidents took place in internal waters and the 41.7% of the accidents occurred in internal waters took place in port areas. Most of these accidents have caused environmental pollution through the release of dangerous substances such as oil and Hazardous-Noxious-Substances (HNS).
The project BE-READY aims to fill an existing gap implementing a Med Environmental Decision Support System (EDSS), which is easily exportable to different geographical contexts and can model the most common sources of pollution, such as oil and HNS.
Be-ready partners are strategically located in the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, and the European part of the Atlantic Ocean. The project is coordinated by the University of Genoa and the partnership is composed of the European Research Institute, the Fundacion
Instituto De Hidraulica Ambiental De Cantabria IHCantabria, the Office d’Exploitation du port de Tripoli, and the Marine Science Station (MSS) of the University of Jordan-Aqaba.
